TOPIK, or Test of Proficiency in Korean (한국어 능력 시험) is a Korean language proficiency test, now offered 4 times a year to foreign speakers (initially, it was once a year from 1997 to 2006, then twice from 2007 to 2009). TOPIK is administered by the Korea Institute of Curriculum and Evaluation (or 한국교육과정평가원 in Korean).
Test format – the test consists of 4 sections:
- vocabulary & grammar (어휘 및 문법),
- writing (쓰기),
- listening (듣기), and
- reading (읽기).
And luckily ^^, there is currently no oral section!!!
Two versions of the test are offered: standard (S)-TOPIK and the business (B)-TOPIK. But, I will explain only the S-TOPIK because it’s more relevant to me.
There are three different levels of S-TOPIK:
- beginner (초급),
- intermediate (중급), and
- advanced (고급).
Depending on the average score and minimum marks in each section it is possible to obtain grades 1-2 in beginner, 3-4 in intermediate and 5-6 in advanced S-TOPIK.
In Cambodia, there is also a certified test center in Phnom Penh. The first test in Cambodia was the 19th (제19회) which took place in Sep 2010, in which around 269 test-takers were registered.
For me, I’m aiming for Level 4 (Intermediate) or higher after my 1-year Korean language course at IIE, KHU. Wish me luck!
